Maruti Suzuki has officially launched the WagonR Flex Fuel in India, marking a significant milestone as the country’s first mass-market flex-fuel passenger vehicle. This innovative car supports a wide range of ethanol-petrol blends, from E20 to E100, aligning with India’s strategic push to reduce crude oil imports and lower carbon emissions.

Key Takeaways

  • India’s first mass-market flex-fuel passenger vehicle launched.
  • Supports ethanol blends from E20 to E100.
  • Aims to reduce crude oil imports and carbon emissions.
  • Government plans to expand ethanol dispensing stations significantly.

A Step Towards Greener Mobility

The newly launched WagonR Flex Fuel is equipped with an advanced engine control unit (ECU) that automatically adapts to varying ethanol blends. This allows drivers to use any mix of petrol and ethanol without manual adjustments, offering flexibility and convenience. The introduction of this technology on a popular model like the WagonR is expected to accelerate the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles among everyday consumers.

Government’s Push for Ethanol

The launch aligns with the Indian government’s ambitious strategy to promote ethanol-based mobility. Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri were present at the launch, emphasizing the dual benefits of reducing dependence on imported crude oil and strengthening the rural economy by creating sustained demand for ethanol. The government has set a target of establishing approximately 5,000 ethanol dispensing outlets across the country by the end of 2027, a crucial step for the widespread usability of flex-fuel vehicles.

Addressing Energy Security and Emissions

Maruti Suzuki’s Managing Director and CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, highlighted that flex-fuel vehicles are a key part of the company’s strategy to meet India’s goals of reducing oil imports and carbon emissions. By utilizing biofuels like ethanol, produced from domestic sources such as sugarcane and maize, India can enhance its energy security, save foreign exchange, and contribute to a cleaner environment. Flex-fuel vehicles are also considered zero-emission vehicles by NITI Aayog, further supporting the nation’s air pollution control efforts.

The Road Ahead

While the introduction of the WagonR Flex Fuel is a significant step, the success of flex-fuel technology in India hinges on the development of a robust ecosystem. This includes ensuring the widespread availability and attractive pricing of E85 and E100 fuels, alongside consumer awareness initiatives. Maruti Suzuki is committed to exploring multiple fuel technologies, including EVs, hybrids, and CNG, as part of its broader vision for sustainable mobility in India.
