Google’s latest AI advancements, branded as Gemini Intelligence, are set to debut on Android devices, promising enhanced features like smarter autofill and improved voice-to-text capabilities. However, the rollout comes with stringent hardware requirements, potentially excluding a significant portion of current Android users, even those with premium devices.

Key Takeaways

  • Gemini Intelligence requires a flagship chip, at least 12GB of RAM, and support for AI Core and Gemini Nano v3 or higher.
  • Devices must also commit to at least five Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates.
  • Many current premium phones, including the Pixel 9 series and Galaxy Z Fold 7, do not meet these specifications.
  • The list of compatible devices is largely limited to 2026 releases and select high-end models.

Steep Hardware Requirements

Gemini Intelligence, Google’s umbrella term for its most advanced AI features on premium Android devices, necessitates substantial hardware. According to Google’s official documentation, devices must feature a “flagship chip,” boast a minimum of 12GB of RAM, and support AI Core and Gemini Nano v3 or a later version. Furthermore, devices need a commitment of at least five Android OS upgrades and six years of quarterly security updates, alongside meeting certain quality and reliability benchmarks.

Excluded Devices

The requirement for Gemini Nano v3 is a significant hurdle. Google’s developer page lists devices compatible with this AI model, and the list predominantly includes 2026 releases. Notably, devices as recent as the Pixel 9 series and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 are still on Gemini Nano v2 and thus will not qualify for Gemini Intelligence at launch. This means many premium phones from the past couple of years may be excluded from experiencing these new AI features.

Compatible Devices

The devices confirmed to support Gemini Nano v3, and therefore likely to run Gemini Intelligence, include:

  • Google: Pixel 10 series
  • Honor: Magic 8 Pro
  • iQOO: iQOO 15
  • Motorola: Signature
  • OnePlus: OnePlus 15 series
  • OPPO: Find X9 series, and select Reno models
  • Realme: realme GT 7T
  • Samsung: Galaxy S26 series
  • Vivo: vivo X200T, X200, X200 Pro, X300, X300 Pro

While this list represents devices that meet the Gemini Nano v3 Prompt API requirements, Google has clarified that full Gemini Intelligence feature set access also depends on meeting the memory, chipset, software, and security standards. The company has not officially defined “flagship-grade” processors, but industry expectations point towards high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon and MediaTek Dimensity chipsets.

Future Outlook

Gemini Intelligence is slated to debut on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices later this year, with reports suggesting the Galaxy Z Fold 8 might be among the first to feature it. The strict requirements raise questions about whether older flagship devices with Gemini Nano v2 could receive partial compatibility through future software updates. The move underscores a growing trend of AI features demanding cutting-edge hardware, potentially creating a divide among Android users.
